an association between the sicca syndrome and inflammatory polyneuropathy, and lends further support to the hypothesis that, like the sicca syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus with which they are also associated,2 the inflammatory polyneuropathies have an auto-immune basis. Our patient developed a clinical neuropathy at a time when symptoms of the sicca syndrome were minimal. This finding illustrates the value of maintaining a high index of clinical suspicion, and of performing a serological auto-antibody screen in patients suspected of having an inflammatory polyneuropathy, but in whom there are no overt features of an associated disease. Role of thymectomy in myasthenia gravis.
Thirteen patients with myasthenia gravis underwent total thymectomy between January, 1988 and December, 1991. The duration of symptoms prior to surgery varied from 2 months to 20 years. In a follow-up ranging from 2 months to 4 years, 11 patients showed a significant improvement with either complete discontinuation of medication or a marked reduction in doses. One patient with a small benign th...
متن کاملTitle:recurrence after Thymoma Resection According to the Extent of the Resection Authors
According to the recommendation of The International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group (ITMIG), surgical resection of anything less than a complete thymectomy is considered inappropriate at this time except in the context of a clinical trial. Therefore, limited thymectomy may be not appropriate for thymoma resection. However, there is little evidence that mandates surgeons perform complete thyme...
متن کاملMyasthenia Gravis Appearing After Thymectomy: a Case Report and Review of the Literature
A small proportion of thymoma patients without myasthenia gravis (MG) have been observed to develop MG after total removal of the thymoma. However, the underlying cause is not yet known due to the rarity of postoperative MG patients. We report a 39-year-old man in whom MG appeared after surgical removal of a thymoma. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed no signs of recurren...
متن کاملMyasthenia gravis appearing after thymectomy for thymoma.
OBJECTIVE A few thymoma patients without myasthenia gravis (MG) have been observed to develop MG after total removal of the thymoma (postoperative MG). However, the cause of this is not yet known because of the rarity of postoperative MG patients. This study evaluated the clinical characteristics of the 8 postoperative MG patients. METHODS We compiled 1089 thymoma patients treated between 199...
متن کاملComplete Remission of Generalized Myasthenia Gravis by Corticosteroid Treatment Alone without Thymectomy
Many long-term, follow-up studies have shown that steroids are effective in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) who have undergone thymectomy. However, few long-term studies have documented the response of MG to steroids alone. We describe two patients who successfully resolved the symptoms of MG without myasthenic crisis or serious side effects by steroid treatment without thymectomy or other...
